The majority of Non-Muslims in North America who have some general knowledge of Islam have come to know that Muslims consider Jesus (peace be upon him) to be a Prophet of God who came with Divine revelations known to them as lnjeel or The Holy Bible.
I would like to share with our readers the verses in the Holy Quran, which describe the prophetic mission of Jesus (PBUH) and his status in Islam. Just to say that Muslims consider him to be a Prophet without defining his place in Islam isn't saying very much at all.
The following are the verses which pertain to the life and mission of this great Prophet (PBUH) and how his obedience to the will of God caused his followers to love, respect and obey his teachings.
The Birth of Jesus
Surah III, vs. 45: Behold! the angels said: "O Mary! God giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the one of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to God.
Vs. 46: "He shall speak to the people in childhood and in maturity and he shall be (of the company) of the righteous."
Vs. 47: She said: "O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man hath touched me?" He said: "Even so: God createth what He willeth: When He hath decreed a Plan, He but saith to it, "Be", and it is!
The Mission of Jesus (PBUH)
Vs. 48: And God will teach him the Book and Wisdom, The Law and the Gospel,
Vs. 49: "And appoint him an Apostle to the Children of Israel, (with this message): "I have come to you, with a sign from your Lord, In that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by God's leave: And I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I quicken the dead, by God's leave; and I declare to you what ye eat, and what ye should store in your houses. Surely therein is a Sign for you if you believe.
Vs. 50: "(1 have come to you), to attest the Law which was be- fore me, and to make lawful to you part of what was (before) forbidden to you; I have come to you with a Sign from your Lord. So fear God and obey me.
Vs. 51: "It is God who is my Lord and your Lord; Then worship Him, in a way that is straight".
The above verses describe the miraculous birth of Jesus (PBUH), in that he had no biological father, and also encompasses his miracles and teachings.
The following verses from the Holy Quran deal with the topic of those who claimed that Jesus (PBUH) is the Son of God. Islam does not recognize any partnership with God but states that He is unique without relations of any sort. It is strongly felt that the first followers of Jesus (PBUH), his Apostles and Disciples were not holders of such an opinion of Jesus but that the original Scriptures were tampered with and rewritten by uninspired authors who ascribed Divinity unto Jesus.
The Holy Qur'an testifies that Jesus (PHUH) is not Divine nor the Son of God
Surah IV, vs. 171: δΌ€ People of the Book! Commit not excesses in your religion; nor say of God aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) an apostle of God, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a Spirit proceeding from Him; so believe in God and His apostles. Say not "Trinity": desist: It will be better for you: for God is One God; Glory be to Him: (Far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is God as a Disposer of affairs.
It is stated in the Holy Quran that on the Day of Judgement Jesus (PBUH) will stand with his followers and God will ask him if he ever claimed Divinity or to be the son of God and his reply will be the following:
Jesus (PBUH) denies Divinity
Surah V, vs. 119: And behold! God will say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Didst thou say unto men, Worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of God?" He (Jesus) will say: "Glory to Thee! Never could I say what I have no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, Thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowest what is in my heart, though I know not what is in Thine. For Thou knowest in full all that is hidden.
Vs. 120: "Never said I to them aught except what Thou Didst command me to say, to wit, "Worship God, my Lord and your Lord'; and I was a witness over them whilst I dwelt amongst them; when thou didst take me up Thou wast the Watcher over them, and Thou art a witness to all things.
The last and final point I would like to make is that in the Holy Quran Jesus does prophesy the coming of Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH) as the Messenger of God and the verse is as follows:
Jesus (PBUH) speaks of the coming of Prophet Muhammad (PB UH)
Surah LXI, Vs. 6: And remember, Jesus, the son of Mary, said: "O Children of Israel! I am the apostle of God (sent) to you, confirming the Law (which came) before me, and giving Glad Tidings of an apostle to come after me, whose name shall be "Ahmad". But when he came to them with Clear Signs, they said, "This is evident sorcery!.
These are the Quranic verses, which refer to Prophet Jesus (PBUH) which I encourage our readers to reflect upon. Islam respects all Prophets of God and their messages and makes no distinction between them. To negate one Messenger of God, to a Muslim, is to completely reject Faith as Islam exists in totality from the beginning of Creation to its' end.
In the Holy Qur'an, Jesus (PBUH) refers to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as "Ahmad". The word "Ahmad" and "Muhammad" both have the same meaning which is "To praise God", derived from the Arabic word "HAMD" meaning "Praise".
